3 Questions to Ask A Trailer Dealer

Have you ever gone shopping for a new trailer, only to find that the salesperson is so busy trying to sell you the features of the vehicle that they forget to ask you what your needs are? Then, after a lot of wasted time and energy at the trailer dealer, it’s time to buy it.

These problems may not have popped up if your dealer actually took the time to talk about what you’re looking for in your next trailer.

The Pro-line Trailers team is here to guide you on the trailer purchasing process to make sure you get the right trailer for your needs.  However, if you know what questions to ask before setting foot on the lot, you can save yourself a lot of time, energy, and money. Here are three important queries that will help guide your trailer-buying experience:

1. Does the Trailer Dealer Provide a Pre-Delivery Inspection?

Asking this question to your trailer dealer can be a great way to ensure that your new enclosed or open trailer is going to be ready for the road. If a dealer isn’t willing to give you a thorough pre-delivery inspection, it’s probably because they don’t know how, or they don’t want to take responsibility for the issues they find.

The dealer has to meet certain qualifications to perform these inspections.  The Pro-line Trailers team will show you how to use all the features on your trailer.

They also need access to all the necessary equipment for inspecting the trailer before purchase (such as lift ramps).  A great thing to look for is doing the trailer dealership has a full-service center on-site.

You should also ask if there are any fees associated with the inspection process. Some dealers may charge extra if they discover problems during their inspection but not repair them immediately after discovery. If this is the case, find another dealer who doesn’t charge extra for these services.

2. Does the Dealer Have Documentation Relating to Used Units?

If the dealer has a record of repairs, you will want to see if a qualified mechanic did them and review the records for any recurring problems.  At Pro-line Trailer each used trailer is serviced and the necessary state inspections are completed prior to the sale.

3. Does the Trailer Come With a Warranty?

A warranty is a written guarantee that the manufacturer will repair your trailer if it is damaged during normal use. You can purchase an extended warranty for additional peace of mind and cover damage that isn’t covered by the original warranty.

Most warranties run for one year, but some can be for up to five years and are generally based on the individual components. The length of your warranty can vary and is always a great question to ask.  Typically used trailers don’t automatically come with a standard manufacturer’s warranty but can be purchased by an after-market company.

Guarantee

Be sure and get clarification on what the warranty covers.  However, not all warranties are equal. Some only cover parts and labor, while others will reimburse you for the full purchase price of new replacement items. It’s important to read through your warranty carefully so that you know what is and isn’t covered before something goes wrong.

Warranty Cost

The cost of an extended trailer warranty varies depending on the length and coverage level you choose. On average, expect to pay between $1,000 and $20,000 per year for a comprehensive policy.
