Dump trucks have a long history. They go back over 100 years to when they were  invented in England. Since then, their basic form has remained true to their original objective but the power and dumping technology have massively improved.

You could say that dump trailers basically follow the same history but need to be hitched to a vehicle. Dump trucks and trailers are used to move aggregate from one location to another. Even though their basic use has not changed, it is remarkable that trailer technology continues to innovate in its own way. For example, since the late 1990s, it is possible to use  frameless dump trailers that are lighter than their counterparts. So on the surface, it would be easy to conclude these tools are basically the same. Be prepared to think again. In doing so, you will see which better suits your needs.

Why Choose a Dump Truck?

Dump trucks are a powerhouse of moving stuff. You can load them with almost anything. There are many styles and types but they follow the same idea of a powerful engine and vehicle with a big bed trailer already attached and integrated as one vehicle This means they are super strong and stable. They can carry up to 14 tonnes of weight. This will vary in the size and design of the truck. They have a powerful tipping mechanism suitable to the maximum load they are capable of carrying. Owing to the fact that dump trucks are one integrated vehicle means that they are stable during tipping, even when tipping an awkward and heavy load. This also means the engine and vehicle dimensions are also designed to work together.

The Disadvantages of Using a Dump Truck

The major disadvantage of a dump truck is its cost. They are expensive, to say the least. Prices start at around $100,000.

Another disadvantage is that once you have your dump truck you will be operating a one size fits all approach to whatever you need to move. Dump trucks are flexible in that they will move anything but that may not be the most cost-effective approach.

Why Should I Choose a Dump Trailer?

There is no doubt dump trucks are an amazing tool if you can afford them. On the other hand, dump trailers offer many of the characteristics and advantages of dump trucks but without the high cost.

Dump trailers offer a wide bed just like dump trucks. Dump trailers have powerful lifting mechanisms just like dump trucks. Dump trailers come in lots of different sizes and designs, somewhat similar to dump trucks.

Of course, a major consideration in choosing a dump truck versus a dump trailer is what sort of vehicle do you have to pull the dump trailer and is it appropriate for the load you will pull and the terrain over which you will travel? Assuming this consideration is well accounted for, then you could say that dump trailers are a better choice as they allow you to better customize the size and dimension of the trailer to the type and weight of your load while also taking into account the pulling vehicle. Bear in mind  pulling a trailer also requires skill and experience.
